AP Count — Coverage Model (Onyx)

  • Design intent (auto-derived): scored from device count + DL/UL demand + use case → Coverage / Balanced / Capacity-Oriented.
  • Base coverage: environment baseline (table below) × intent factor (indoor 1.0 / 0.70 / 0.40 · outdoor 1.0 / 0.70 / 0.45)
  • Clutter: Low 1.0× · Medium 0.8× · High 0.6×
  • 5G DL scale (US): DLscale = BW/20 → 20 MHz=1.0×, 40 MHz=2.0×, 100 MHz=5.0× · EMEA: DLscale = P/5W
  • UL cap: Handset 1.1× · Ext. Antenna 1.25× · CPE 1.5×. Auto = min(DLscale, ULcap)
  • Coverage formula: APs_cov = ⌈ Area ÷ (Base × Clutter × Auto × Stance) × (1 + Buffer) ⌉

AP Count — Capacity Model (Onyx)

  • Device mix: busy-hour demand = Σ count × per-device bitrate × activity factor (DL and UL separately). Bitrates and activity per device type are listed in the Device Library below.
  • Quick mode: density midpoint (12 / 50 / 150) × 0.65 concurrency × representative bitrate (DL 2/20/75 · UL 0.5/5/25 Mbps).
  • Usable cell capacity: peak table throughput × usable-capacity factor (Comparison Assumptions).
  • Frame selection (device mix): the TDD frame / LTE config that needs the fewest cells for the actual DL:UL demand.
  • APs_cap = max( ⌈ DL ÷ usableCellDL ⌉, ⌈ UL ÷ usableCellUL ⌉ ) · Final: APs = max(APs_cov, APs_cap)

Wi-Fi 6 Reference Model

  • Same rules, same site: identical area, intent factor, clutter, planning stance, buffer and device-class credit are applied to the Wi-Fi model. Only the per-radio coverage and capacity differ.
  • Coverage: WiFi_cov = ⌈ Area ÷ (WiFiBase(env) × Intent × Clutter × (ULcap ÷ 1.1) × Stance) × (1 + Buffer) ⌉
  • Capacity: Wi-Fi is half-duplex and contention-based, so DL and UL share one airtime pool: WiFi_cap = ⌈ (DL + UL) ÷ (Effective/AP × Planned load) ⌉
  • Range: low/high bounds use the sourced low/high coverage and throughput values.
